How To Handle A Relationship Breakup with Gertrude Bvindi

The main thrust of this column is to rethink and relook the various aspects of our society, and how these have changed in the current times. Of note are relationships and the turn they have taken over the years. Are our values of 10 years ago, still applicable today? So Getting Rude, implies talking about those changes in the most open way- some people in the older generations might think its out of this world yet young people today might be helped in their constant daily challenges.

I had for a long time, looked to my ex as the source of my livelihood. It did not help that he was also very willing to string me along and make me think that we still had a chance. It took one nice long lecture from my friend called Brenda, which at the time i felt was heartless, and a week of crying to get over that nonsense. Many a times, we create problems for ourselves because we hold on to pain that is far beyond its ability to serve us. We replay our mistakes and perceived mistakes, over and over in our heads and try and figure out where we went wrong. More often than not it is never about you, you were probably not to blame at all, but because someone said ‘it was your fault, we are only too willing to look ourselves over and try and wonder why what happened. I wish someone had told me this before. And now that i know this, these are steps that I believe we can all use to get over a relationship. What is important is letting go and realising that there surely is life after a failed relationship. Do not beat yourself up for something that is not worthy of your effort and time is bound not to last. We should be empowered in the long run to end unhealthy, abusive relationships.

Firstly, you need to define your own personal goals. Forget the wedding plans, were you were going to live with him, or even that his family had accepted you into fold. Its now time to look at what you want to achieve in your life. Decide what is important to you in the long term and as long as it does not tally with what that relationship stands for, let it go. Never drop your standards too low for someone who is already giving your grief and drama. Cut your losses, set new goals and start putting your life together.
Value yourself. Believe in yourself and in your ability to look after and come through for yourself. Sometimes we rely too much on our partner that we begin to forget what we are really capable of. In my case i would even act blonde, just so i would not make him uncomfortable with my intelligence. He wanted a stay at home wife, so when i was still dating him, i was not effectively looking for a decent paying job. When you value yourself, it will help you move forward with your life than putting it on hold for someone, and waiting for a change that is effectively not coming.
Do not wait around thinking things will change. There is a Shona proverb that even supports this notion, “shiri ine muririro wayo haiuregi”. Generally a person’s past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour, so don’t hold your breath thinking the frog will turn into prince charming.

We usually have a strong urge to forge ahead, and keep working hard at it, even though there are clear indications that you have reached the end of the road, there is no light at the end of that tunnel. It is important to give up the desire to win every issue. Ask yourself how big winning is at this point? Is it worth it to sacrifice yourself and your happiness over this? If not, let it go. You do not always need to be right and if your feel you do, that in itself is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Let go of grudges. What most of us do not realise is that letting go is not surrendering, in fact, holding on to them allows them to shape your future. Holding on to your past stunts your emotional growth, you basically do not learn to handle disappointments and move on. Rather you flourish in the world of what could have been, and dream big in your own world. When reality strikes second time around, we are usually unable to pull ourselves out of this. Then we wonder were depression and stress come from?
The most important thing everyone needs is to be realistic. An attitude adjustment may be needed. Accepting that a relationship is over, even if your are still in it is a good start, It is not realistic to keep hoping for a miracle, but rather take the right steps to reach an equally good solution. Sometimes growth and improvement cannot occur in your life until you are willing to let go of dreams and start exploring very new possibilities. This helps open up your mind and who knows, you might be too busy to even remember you had drama in the recent past, a distraction that you really need.
Lastly surround yourself with positive people. Hang around people you trust, people who believe in you, who encourage you and who will help you to build your self esteem. The closest to you can help you see that you still a worthy person. Do not hang around people who will make you feel like killing yourself, or your ex’s friends. The y will tell you how you were good together and all the other rosy things that keep you on cloud nine. If your friends have taken to associating with him, ditch them, they are not worth your time either. Be around people who will make you feel and know that you don’t have to be alone or go it alone. In as much as you are responsible for your own life and your own decisions, seeking guidance from friends and at times professionals can make a world of difference. Just don’t go confiding in everyone , and be surprised when you are the talk of town. Do not trust his friends either, some might have hidden agendas against you, the end result is more drama.

What is True Love?

Just been wondering on when can couples really fall in love? It seems couples never fall in love at one time as they claim 'love at first site'. Some may not agree with me on this but if truth be said there is no such thing particularly to love that comes after 25yrs preceding lots of times lost through trials. This can be supported by the simple fact why more married man never got their wives virgins after 20s as they lose it in the name of 'love' but later marries in true love.
True love is manufactured through horrid lessons of growing up. Sacrifices, the growth in mind to accept what's in your hand as the best ever! Yet through sacrifice as well dozens of couples live an institutionalized marriage~to do what's expected, what's good for children and the environment and perhaps what God and his prophets desires, not what a personal heart feels! Its a pit as this is largely caused by the scope of egoism, greedy and pride(the worst of them all is pride). This is largely followed by gross cheating and adultery- what's the difference between cheating & adultery anyway?

I would like to take a light view on this one. Cheating! This term is more favored by our dear wives "you cheating on me! He is cheating on me" they always cry, isn't there a better way of saying 'things'. It doesn't matter the ultimate outcome is almost the same. Men prefers the term 'whore' to an unfaithful partner.
Let's say people marries in a rush or later discovers lots of dislikes in a partner which would gravely affect the sex life, what would be the best remedy? Say for instance one partner likes his beer so much so that he/she would forget the centimeter away partner to a point of irritation. If talking the person out of this habit fails what would be the best remedy? Or the wife is into partying with friends to a no return point( just examples)
Behviour change can bring ugly detrimental effects to a marriage. Yes I understand as humans we are dynamic and forever changing, we should change it towards a positive acceptable norm to suit our partners too. If couples could realise this earlier before they start lying their way to hell, I believe lots of relationships could have been saved and happiness restored.

Let's not forget that we get into relationships all blindfolded! The revelations comes later. Some even indulge in sexual activities before falling in love. Others makes it while some always sheds tears there after. Be careful of what you need in an affair. If you need love then know that love is earned just like respect! (You only earn once you worked)

I still wonder on how often we lie to our partners. Always it starts as a small getaway to silly mischief(s) till it becomes a habit (much more enjoyable) and ultimately becoming a culture then its done! Rehabilitation to this maybe lifelong. The earlier one realises that they lie 90% and say the truth 10%, the earlier they should start working on it. Married or not married lies will eventually corrode a person to hell where the architecture of lies Lucifer dwells. I lie too and I'm no angel! God help.

If out of a sudden your partner just wake up one day and starts with the make up, perfume staff or anything they would haven't been doing then be sure that you will be in for a rude awakening! How you can help it I don't know. Lies are most complemented by a rude behaviour which is triggered by the spirit of defense. We all defend our actions, bad or good, that's the pride of being your ownself! Once this defensive attitude starts ruling, the 'honest' partner would panic and triggers the apologetic attitude! Here we go, a justification of idiotic behaviour. I believe an apology is an acception of guilty therefore once u start apologizing to almost anything even if you are right then you gone too! If you didn't do any wrong rather keep quiet than abusing the divine word 'sorry' otherwise you help cleanse a lying partner's conscience! Let him/her rot with inner guilty for they will soon or later meet their match on doomsday. Unfortunately life can be such rude hence try and work hard for a true love before you trapped in a hell house.

How can we survive? Does True Love Exist?

How to Live a Healthy Life in Mutare Zimbabwe

      image THE TRAVELING STORYTELLER

My first article is about healthy living because it is important at all ages.Leading a healthy lifestyle can help you live longer and reduce your risk of illness.A few small changes can make a big difference to your health.Decide to make a change today! My subsequent articles  will touch most commons ailments and chronic conditions and practical ways of reducing further harm.

 5 STEPS TO HEALTH LIVING
Please try one step at a time if it is impractical for you to  have a go at all of them!
1.Know your healthy weight
If you are overweight, think about the size of your meals and what you eat in between meals.Being overweight is directly linked to a lower life expectancy and can lead to other health related problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The best way to know your ideal weight is to calculate  what is called your Body Mass Index(BMI).You can easily do this yourself at home  just  measure your weight in kgs and height in metres and BMI =weight(kg)divided by height x height in metres. If  you are not sure how to work it out consult your pharmacist or any health professional. Normal BMI  is 20-25 and overweight is >25 .This just gives you a guideline as to where you are in terms of  having a healthy weight.I will dedicate an article in future about dieting.
2.Eat a well balanced healthy diet
A diet low in fat and salt is ideal. Most of us Zimbabweans  enjoy our salt in food such as in braai meat but this is very detrimental to our healthy as it raises our blood pressure leading to further complications.Try to keep a food diary so that you know exactly what you have eaten and when.More dedicated people will keep a diary check of their calories they eat in a day because the more calories we eat the more weight we gain.

3.Be active
Be active each day for 30-60 minutes, three to five times per week. This is quite achievable for most of us since walking is also considered an activity.Majority of us Zimbabweans are quite active which is a good thing but for those leading a more sedentary lifestyle you should start thinking about maybe joining a gym, exercise class or even Zumba dancing!

4.Stop Smoking
Giving up smoking is the single most important thing you can do to improve your health. It is a well known fact smoking  causes heart problems and lung cancer and stopping smoking actually adds years to your life.I  know stopping smoking is not easy but with willpower you can succeed and also there are several stop smoking aids to support you which i will cover in my other articles. This applies really to male Zimbabweans mostly as culturally they are the majority of smokers.

5.Drink sensibly
I know Zimbabweans love their beer but know your limits.Alcohol causes so many health and socio-economic problems and should be avoided if possible. It is recommended that men should not drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol per day and women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units of alcohol per day.1 pint of lager=3 units  and 1 large glass of wine=3 units.
Don't be afraid to ask for help and support.
Remember it's never too late to change try one step at a time.
