Zim student in line for top US award

A ZIMBABWEAN student athlete who holds the country’s 100m record has been nominated for a prestigious award in the United States – and he needs your help.
Ngoni Makusha, 24, has made an amazing splash on the track and field scene in the United States where he is a student at Florida State University.
A former student at Chemhanza Secondary School in rural Seke, Makusha this year set a US college and Zimbabwe national record in the 100 meters with a time of 9.89 seconds at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

For his efforts, Makusha has become one of three athletes nominated for the prestigious Bowerman Award for the Top Athlete in College Sports in the United States.

The winner of the award will be picked from an online poll, and as at 12AM on Thursday, he was tied on 36 percent with Jeshua Anderson of Washington State with Christian Taylor of Florida not far behind with 28 percent.


Rebecca Zeigler Mano, an EducationUSA advisor at the US embassy in Harare, said: “Given that the other two contestants are Americans with a much larger constituency, Ngoni needs our votes!

“Everyone should take a moment to support an amazingly accomplished Zimbabwean student.”

Voting in the poll ends on August 16.
